What we found
Segway Ninebot KickScooter: FYou bought a scooter, not a GPS ankle bracelet.
App requires precise location to even connect via Bluetooth. Background location active when app closed. API routes to ninebot.com servers. March 2026 breach confirmed ride history and GPS stored server-side for millions of users.
Neuron N3 E-Scooter: CEvery Neuron scooter has a camera pointed forward, recording everything as it moves through your city.
Neuron invested multi-million dollars in front-facing AI-powered cameras installed on every N3 scooter in their fleet. The ScootSafe Vision system uses on-device computer vision to process video in real-time. These cameras are deployed across Brisbane, Darwin, Canberra, Townsville, Bundaberg, Rockhampton, and other Australian cities — thousands of cameras continuously moving through public spaces recording streets, buildings, and pedestrians. The privacy policy discloses collection of 'data about the area and environment around the e-scooter' but does not clearly specify camera footage retention periods or access policies.
Saturn 5 E-Scooter: CBeam tells you they share your trip data with councils in a safe, anonymous way — but they were actually caught faking the data they sent to councils.
Auckland Council cancelled Beam's licence on 27 August 2024 after discovering Beam systematically manipulated the data it shared with councils via Ride Report. Beam president Deb Gangopadhyay emailed staff on 17 April 2023 directing them to mark operational vehicles as 'unrideable' or 'unknown' to evade fleet caps. Beam exceeded Auckland's device allowance by ~40% (530 ghost vehicles). Licences cancelled in Auckland, Wellington, Canberra, Brisbane, and Townsville.
